strawberry-filled candy

strawberry-filled candies, aka strawberry bon bons, are a favorite retro candy at true treats. the reason could be the texture: a hard, candy shell with a smooth, jelly-like filling. the perfect complement. or it could be the flavor, sweet as strawberry jam with barely hint of tartness. or, perhaps, the wrapper. while other hard candies were wrapped in clear plastic, strawberry-filled candies were wrapped to look like their namesake – a strawberry with seed-speckled design on the wrapper, and a leaf-like green top. more than anything, though, filled strawberries are jam-packed with history as a favorite of old-time grandmothers who passed them along from purse and candy bowl.
